Biography

The Lumière brothers were the first filmmakers in history. They patented the cinematograph in 1895, which in contrast to Edison's "peepshow" kinetoscope allowed simultaneous viewing by multiple parties. Their first film, Sortie de l'usine Lumière de Lyon, shot the same year, is considered the first true motion picture that was publicly screened on December 28, 1895 at the Salon indien du Grand Café in Paris. An event considered to be the birth of cinema.
